COMMUNICATION IN THE SPHERE OF MODERN COMPUTING TECHNOLOGIES
Communication in the Sphere of Modern Computing Technologies
is designed for future specialists in computing science and aims at developing their skills in English language professional communication. The publication
suggests typical tasks that a specialist in computing technologies may encounter and provides useful tips for working out effective solutions. It is mainly
oriented at optimizing the students’ independent (non-guided) work and can be used as an addition to the main coursebook and training materials.
In the first place, this electronic publication is shaped for the fifth-year students who major in information technology at the School of Intercultural
Communication, Minsk State Linguistic University. The material is oriented at those who take the “Cultural context of professional communication” course
and wish to improve their skills in discussing computer technologies in English. It can also be used by advanced students of English majoring in
information technology at other universities.
The material encompasses several topics that can be of great interest for specialists in modern computing technologies: the positive role of computers in
our lives and their negative effect, the hidden functionalities of Windows OS, the use of wireless devices, graphic design and its potential, the future of
e-books and online libraries, the pervasive nature of social networks, pros and cons of links, the ways to optimize modern search engines, the development
of computer gaming, “the golden rules” of computer security.
Each unit is divided into six sections. Section I encourages the students to “warm up” and refresh their memory on the topic under consideration. Section
II provides authentic texts to study and questions to check the students’ understanding of the material. Section III focuses on the vocabulary which is
supposed to be enriched by the students in the course of studying the topic. Section IV uncovers different aspects of the topic and encourages the students
to work out effective solutions to the given problems. Section V provides useful tips for preparing the final presentation. Section VI details the task for
the final project (talk-show, panel discussion, persuasive speech, PowerPoint presentation, conference speech etc.). The publication is supplied with
electronic quizzes which will help the students test their knowledge of the topic.
